Umrah Visa From the USA: How Americans Apply

Travellers leaving from the United States usually have more than one way to enter Saudi Arabia for Umrah, and the confusion starts there. One friend says they got a tourist eVisa online in a day. Another says their travel agent handled an Umrah visa. Both can be true, because Saudi Arabia runs several entry channels and Umrah is allowed on more than one of them.

This guide sets out the routes as they generally work for people applying from the USA, what each one asks for, and the checks worth running before money changes hands. Visa rules change, and they change without much notice. Treat everything here as a map of the process, then confirm the current terms on the official Saudi portal or with the Saudi embassy or consulate that covers your state before you book anything.

Which visa lets you perform Umrah

More than one visa type can be used for Umrah. Saudi Arabia has for several years allowed pilgrims to perform Umrah on a tourist visa as well as on a dedicated Umrah visa issued through a licensed provider. What no visitor visa allows is Hajj. Hajj needs its own visa or permit, and using a visit visa for it is treated as a serious offence.

So the practical question from the USA is not "which visa is the real Umrah visa", it is "which channel is open to my passport, on my dates, at a cost I understand". The table below is the usual shape of the choice.

RouteWho it usually suitsWhat it involves
Tourist eVisa applied for yourselfUS passport holders travelling independently or with a small groupAn online application in your own name, paid by card, with insurance normally bundled into the fee
Umrah visa through a licensed providerPilgrims buying a package that includes hotels and transportThe provider files the application against your booking, so the visa follows the package
Visa on arrivalHolders of certain passports and certain existing visas, where offeredApplied for at the airport, which is convenient but leaves no margin if you are turned away

Eligibility for each route is set by Saudi authorities and reviewed regularly. Our Umrah visa by country guide explains how the channels differ by nationality, and the visa page for American passport holders keeps the country-level summary in one place.

The tourist eVisa route

The tourist eVisa is the route most US passport holders use when they are not buying a full package. You apply online in your own name, upload what the form asks for, pay by card, and receive the visa by email if it is approved.

Three things about it are worth knowing before you start.

  • The fee is not only the visa. Saudi tourist visa pricing has normally bundled a mandatory insurance policy into the total. You are not buying an optional extra, and you should not be asked to buy the same insurance twice. We break the parts down in Umrah visa cost explained.
  • Validity and stay length are set by the visa, not by your ticket. The tourist visa has commonly been issued as a multiple-entry visa with a limit on how long each individual stay can run. The current terms are printed on the visa and stated on the official portal. Read them rather than relying on what a friend was given last year.
  • Apply from the official portal. Search results are full of lookalike sites that charge a markup to fill in the same form. If a site is not the official Saudi portal or a provider you have verified, treat it as a middleman. Our guide to Umrah scams lists the tells.

Approval is often quick, sometimes within a day or two, but quick is not guaranteed. Apply early enough that a delay does not cost you a flight.

The agent or Umrah visa route

If you buy a package, the provider normally handles the visa as part of it. The application is filed against your confirmed booking, which is why packages ask for passport details early. You give the provider the documents, they submit, and the visa arrives tied to the hotels and dates in the booking.

This route removes the paperwork, and it removes some flexibility with it. Changing dates after a visa is issued against a booking is harder than changing your own tourist visa dates. Ask three questions before you hand over a passport scan:

  1. Who exactly files the application, and are they licensed to do it?
  2. What is the visa charge inside the package price, and is it itemised?
  3. What happens to the money already paid if the visa is refused?

Answers in writing. A provider that will not itemise the visa element is a provider whose invoice you cannot check. Our operator checklist covers licensing and written terms in more detail, and Umrah packages from the USA explains what else sits inside a package price.

Green card holders and other residents

Plenty of pilgrims leaving from the USA do not hold a US passport. Eligibility then depends mainly on the passport you carry, not on where you live, though residence can matter.

Saudi Arabia has at times extended eVisa eligibility to people who hold a valid residence permit or certain valid visas for the United States while carrying another passport. Whether that applies to you on your travel dates is a question for the official portal, because these lists are reviewed and amended. If the online route is closed to your passport, the agent route or a consular application is usually the path, and a licensed provider can tell you which one they can file.

Two practical points for this group. First, the name on your application must match the passport you will actually travel on, letter for letter, not your green card or driver's licence. Second, if you hold two passports, decide which one you are travelling on before you apply and use it consistently for the visa, the tickets and the Nusuk account.

Documents to have ready

Gathering documents before you open the form turns a frustrating hour into fifteen minutes. The list below covers what applications from the USA commonly ask for. The official portal is the authority on the exact requirements and on any photo specification.

ItemWhat to check
PassportValid well beyond your return date. Saudi channels commonly require a comfortable margin, so check the stated minimum rather than assuming
PhotographRecent, plain background, meeting the size and format the portal specifies
Address and contact detailsYour US address, a phone number you can receive messages on abroad, and an email you check
Accommodation detailsHotel booking or the address where you will stay, if the form asks for it
Payment cardA card that works for international payments, with your bank warned so the charge is not blocked
Vaccination recordsSaudi health requirements for pilgrims are updated by season. Check the current list with your doctor and the official source before you travel

Families, children and women travelling

Children normally need their own application and their own passport. A child on a parent's passport is not the usual arrangement for US travellers, so plan for separate documents for every traveller.

On the question of women travelling without a mahram, Saudi entry rules and scholarly opinion are two different subjects. Saudi authorities have in recent years allowed women to apply for visas and perform Umrah without a male guardian accompanying them. Whether you should do so is a religious question on which schools of thought differ, and it is one for your own scholar rather than for a travel site. Our guide to Umrah for women sets out the practical arrangements either way.

Travelling with young children adds a real planning load in the Haram itself. Umrah with family and children covers the pace, the crowds and what to leave out of the plan.

After the visa: permits in Nusuk

A visa gets you into the country. Some things inside the two holy mosques are booked separately, through the official Nusuk app, and they are free to book. Pilgrims are often caught out by this, arrive expecting to walk in, and find they needed a slot.

Set up the app and understand the permit system before you fly. Our complete Nusuk app guide covers the account, and the Rawdah permit guide covers the booking that fills fastest. If the app misbehaves, which it sometimes does on foreign networks, Nusuk app troubleshooting lists the fixes that usually work.

Why applications stall

Most refused or delayed applications from the USA fail on small, avoidable things.

  • Name mismatch. Middle names, hyphens and an abbreviated first name cause more trouble than anything else. Copy the passport exactly.
  • Photograph rejected. Wrong size, a busy background or a scanned print rather than a clear digital photo.
  • Payment declined. A US card blocked on an unfamiliar foreign merchant. Tell your bank first.
  • Passport validity too short. Renew before applying rather than discovering the problem mid-form.
  • Applying on the wrong site. A markup site that files late, or does not file at all.

If your application is refused, resist the urge to submit three more immediately. Find out what was wrong, correct it, and reapply once. Repeated identical submissions do not improve the outcome.

A pre-application checklist

  • Confirm which route is open to your passport on the official portal.
  • Check your passport validity against the stated requirement.
  • Prepare a compliant photo before opening the form.
  • Match every name field to the passport exactly.
  • Tell your bank about the card payment.
  • Keep the confirmation email and the visa PDF offline as well as in your inbox.
  • Book flights only after the visa is in hand, or on a fare you can change.
  • Install and verify the Nusuk app before departure.
  • Check current health requirements with your doctor.

Once the visa is settled, the next decisions are hotels, dates and how much to spend. Start with Umrah cost from the USA for the ranges, and if you would rather have independent operators quote against your dates, request free quotes and ask each one, in writing, how they handle the visa.

A note: this guide is general information for planning. For religious rulings, follow a qualified scholar and your group's guide. For official visa, permit and booking steps, the Nusuk platform (nusuk.sa) is the authority.

Frequently asked questions

Can Americans perform Umrah on a tourist visa?
Saudi Arabia has for several years allowed Umrah to be performed on a tourist visa as well as on a dedicated Umrah visa. Hajj is different and needs its own visa or permit. Confirm the current position on the official Saudi portal before booking, since visa policy is reviewed regularly.
How long does an Umrah visa from the USA take?
Online applications are often approved within a few days, and sometimes faster, but there is no guaranteed turnaround. Apply early enough that a delay does not put your flights at risk, and do not submit repeat applications while one is pending.
Do green card holders apply the same way as US citizens?
Eligibility usually follows the passport you hold rather than your US residence, although Saudi Arabia has at times extended online eligibility to residents of the United States carrying other passports. Check the official portal against your own passport, and use a licensed provider if the online route is closed to you.
Do children need their own Umrah visa?
Yes. Each traveller normally needs their own passport and their own application. Plan for separate documents for every member of the family, including infants.
Can a woman get an Umrah visa without a mahram?
Saudi authorities have in recent years allowed women to apply and travel without a male guardian accompanying them. Whether to do so is a religious question on which scholars differ, so ask your own scholar. Confirm the current entry rules with the official source.
