Umrah Packages From the USA: How to Compare
Two quotes for the same ten nights can differ by thousands of dollars, and the difference is almost never the quality of the faith on offer. It is hotel distance, flight routing, room sharing and what the quote quietly leaves out. Once you can see those four things in a quote, comparing US Umrah packages stops being guesswork.
This guide is about reading offers rather than ranking them. We do not sell packages and we do not publish a list of best operators, because that list would be an advertisement. What follows is the structure of a package, the parts that move the price, and the questions that pull the hidden items into the open before you pay a deposit.
What a package normally includes
A US Umrah package is usually a bundle of five things: the visa, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, ground transport between the two cities and to the airport, some level of guidance, and often flights. Everything else is an extra, even when the brochure implies otherwise.
| Usually included | Often excluded |
|---|---|
| Visa processing | Meals beyond breakfast |
| Hotel nights in Makkah and Madinah | Ziyarat tours and side trips |
| Airport transfers and the intercity transfer | Checked bag fees on the flights |
| A group leader or guide, in group packages | Travel insurance beyond what the visa bundles |
| Flights, in most full packages | Room upgrades and single occupancy |
The general anatomy of an Umrah package is the same wherever you fly from, and we cover it in Umrah packages explained. What is specific to the USA is the flight leg, the size of the market and the fact that most buyers are comparing four or five quotes that describe the same things in different words.
Who actually supplies each part
This is the detail that catches people out. A US company selling you a package is rarely the company that owns the hotel rooms or runs the bus. It buys from a Saudi provider, adds its own services, and sells the result. That is a normal arrangement, not a red flag, but it changes the questions you should ask.
- Who holds the hotel booking? If the US seller cannot name the hotel and show it confirmed, you have a promise rather than a room.
- Who files the visa? See Umrah visa from the USA for the routes. Ask which one applies to you and what happens if it is refused.
- Who is with you in Saudi Arabia? A US guide travelling with the group is a different product from a phone number for a local agent.
- Who takes the money? Payments should go to the company on your written agreement, not to a personal account. Our scams guide covers this.
Run the same licensing and reference checks you would run on any large purchase. The operator checklist lists what to verify and what to walk away from.
The five things that move the price
Almost all of the gap between two US quotes sits in five places. Work out where a cheaper quote is saving before you assume it is a better deal.
- Hotel distance from the Haram. This is the single biggest lever. A walk of a few minutes costs a large multiple of a walk of twenty-five minutes plus a shuttle. See Makkah hotels and distance to the Haram before you decide what you are willing to trade.
- Season. Ramadan, the school holidays and the days around the end of Ramadan carry the highest prices of the year. Quiet months cost far less for the same hotel. Best time to perform Umrah compares them.
- Room occupancy. Quad sharing, triple, twin or single changes the per person price more than most travellers expect. A quote is meaningless until you know how many beds are in the room.
- Flight routing. A one-stop routing on a Gulf or European carrier from a hub near you, versus a cheap two-stop itinerary with a long layover, can move the total by a lot and can cost you a day at each end.
- Nights and split. Ten nights is not twelve, and eight nights in Makkah with two in Madinah is a different trip from an even split. Compare totals per night, not headline prices.
Our cost calculator lets you move these levers and see the effect, and Umrah cost from the USA sets out the ranges in more detail.
Departure hubs and flight routing
Flights are usually the largest single line in a US package, and the routing is where a seller can look cheap while costing you comfort.
Things worth pinning down in writing:
- The exact airports. Into Jeddah, into Madinah, or one of each. Flying into Madinah and out of Jeddah, or the reverse, saves a long intercity leg and is often worth a small premium. Our Makkah or Madinah first guide covers the trade-off.
- Layover length and terminal changes. A nine-hour overnight layover with no hotel is a real cost, especially with children or elderly parents.
- Whether you are in ihram on the plane. If you fly straight to Jeddah for Umrah you will normally need to be in ihram before the aircraft passes the miqat. See miqat for Umrah, and ask the operator how they manage it on your routing.
- Baggage allowance. Zamzam water, gifts and a family of four make baggage a live issue rather than a detail.
- Who holds the ticket. A ticket issued in your name on the airline's system is safer than a seat the operator says it has held.
If you are flying from a major hub, the departure city pages such as Umrah from New York and Umrah from Chicago summarise the usual routings.
Group, private or build your own
There are three ways to do this from the USA, and the right one depends on who is travelling, not on which is cheapest.
| Option | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Group package | First-timers, people who want guidance and company, families with elderly members | Fixed schedule, larger groups move slowly, room sharing with strangers |
| Private or family package | Families, anyone who wants their own pace | Costs more per person, less hand-holding on arrival |
| Booking it yourself | Confident travellers, repeat pilgrims, tight budgets | You carry every arrangement and every problem yourself |
Booking it yourself is genuinely cheaper and genuinely more work. DIY Umrah without an agent walks through what you take on. If it is your first time, the guidance in a group package often earns its cost back in mistakes avoided, and the first-time Umrah guide shows how much there is to learn.
Deposits, refunds and changes
Read the terms before the brochure. Most disputes are about what happens when something changes, and the answer is decided by a document you agreed to weeks earlier.
Get these in writing:
- What the deposit secures, and whether any part of it is refundable.
- The date the balance is due, and what happens if you pay late.
- Whether the operator can change your hotel, and to what standard.
- What happens if the visa is refused, and which costs you still owe.
- The fee to change dates or names, and the deadline for doing so.
- Who to contact in Saudi Arabia, and on what number, when something goes wrong at midnight.
A quote that is not a written agreement is a conversation. If the answers arrive only by phone, ask for them by email and keep the thread.
A side by side comparison sheet
Put your quotes into the same shape before you judge them. Copy these rows into a note or a spreadsheet and fill one column per quote.
| Line | What to record |
|---|---|
| Total per person | All in, including taxes and fees |
| Nights | Makkah and Madinah, listed separately |
| Hotels | Name and walking distance, not a star rating |
| Room | Beds per room and who you share with |
| Flights | Airline, stops, total travel time each way, baggage |
| Meals | Which meals, on which days |
| Transport | Airport transfers and the Makkah to Madinah leg, and by what |
| Guidance | Who travels with the group and what they do |
| Visa | Which route, itemised cost, refund position |
| Terms | Deposit, balance date, change fees, cancellation |
Divide the total by the number of nights and you will often find the cheap quote is not cheap, it is shorter.
Questions to ask before paying
- Which hotel exactly, and can you show me the confirmation?
- How many beds in the room, and can I pay for fewer?
- What is not included that most families end up paying for?
- Who is my contact in Saudi Arabia and how do I reach them at night?
- What happens to my money if the visa is refused?
- Can you send the full terms by email today?
Any operator worth using answers all six without hesitating. If you would like several independent operators to quote against the same dates and room type so the comparison is fair, request free quotes and use the sheet above to score what comes back.
