Umrah Packages Explained
An Umrah package bundles flights, hotels, transfers and visa handling into one price, and the price range between agents for what looks like the same trip is enormous. The difference is almost always in what is excluded and how far the hotel is from the Haram. This guide explains the components so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
What is normally included
- Return flights, often with a connection.
- Hotel nights in Makkah and Madinah at a stated star rating.
- Airport and inter-city transfers.
- Umrah visa handling where applicable.
- Group guidance from a mutawwif or group leader.
What is often excluded
- Meals, or only breakfast.
- Ziyarat tours.
- Travel insurance.
- Ihram, luggage, and local transport within cities.
- Single-room supplements and peak-date surcharges.
Hotel distance is the price
Hotels are graded by walking distance to the Haram. A 5-star tower opposite the mosque and a 5-star hotel 1.5 km away are both 5-star and hundreds of dollars a night apart. Ask for the hotel name and the walking time, not the star rating.
Group versus private
Group packages are cheaper and include guidance; private packages give flexibility on dates and hotels. Families with elderly members often prefer private transfers within a group package.
A checklist for comparing quotes
- Hotel names and walking times in both cities.
- Number of nights in each city.
- Flight routing and total travel time.
- Meals included.
- Visa, insurance and Nusuk handling.
- Cancellation terms.
- Whether the agent is licensed in your country.
