Umrah Visa Application: Step by Step
Applying for a visa for Umrah takes most people under half an hour, provided the documents are ready before the form is opened. The time goes on false starts: a photo that will not upload, a name typed slightly differently from the passport, a card that a bank blocks because the merchant is unfamiliar.
This guide walks through the application in the order you will meet it, with the checks that prevent a resubmission. The screens and the exact requirements are set by Saudi authorities and are revised from time to time, so the official portal always outranks this page. Where something here does not match what you see in front of you, follow the portal.
Before you open the form
Gather six things first and the form becomes a typing exercise: your passport, a compliant digital photo, your home address, a phone number and email you can access while travelling, your intended dates, and a payment card cleared for international use.
Two decisions also need making before you start, because changing them later means starting again.
- Which passport you are travelling on. If you hold two, pick one and use it for the visa, the flights and your Nusuk account. Mixing them causes mismatches at every checkpoint.
- Whether you are applying yourself or through a provider. If a package includes the visa, do not also apply yourself. Two live applications for one traveller creates a problem that takes longer to unwind than it did to create.
The three application routes
There is no single Umrah visa application for everyone. Which route is open to you depends on your nationality and, sometimes, your residence.
| Route | How you apply | Typical user |
|---|---|---|
| Online tourist eVisa | You complete the application yourself on the official Saudi portal and pay by card | Nationals of countries on the eligible list, travelling independently |
| Through a licensed provider | The provider files against your confirmed booking, using documents you supply | Anyone buying a package, and nationalities where the self-service route is closed |
| Consular application | You apply through the Saudi embassy or consulate covering your area | Cases the online channels do not cover |
Check which route applies to you before you pay anyone. Our Umrah visa by country guide sets out how the channels differ by nationality, and the Nusuk visa and permit guide explains how the visa relates to the app you will use once you arrive.
One warning that applies to all three routes. Many of the sites that rank for visa searches are resellers that charge a fee to type your answers into the official form. Some are competent, some are not, and none of them can approve a visa. If you want to use a service, use one you have verified rather than the first advertisement. The Umrah scams guide lists the warning signs.
The application, screen by screen
The self-service application generally follows the sequence below. Names of screens change; the sequence rarely does.
- Create an account. Use an email address you will still have access to in a year and a phone number that can receive verification codes. Save the password somewhere you can find it while abroad.
- Select the visa type and your nationality. The portal will tell you at this point whether the online route is available to your passport.
- Enter passport details. Copy them character by character from the machine-readable page, including middle names and any hyphens. Do not abbreviate.
- Enter personal and contact details. Home address, occupation, phone, email. Keep them consistent with anything a provider may already have filed for you.
- Travel details. Intended dates of arrival and departure, and accommodation if the form asks. Give your best plan. Approval is not a booking contract, but do not invent a hotel you have not looked at.
- Upload documents. Photo, passport page, and anything else the form specifies for your case.
- Review. Read every field against your passport once more. This is the last cheap moment to fix a typo.
- Pay. Card payment, with insurance normally bundled into the fee.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the reference number. You need it to track the application.
Photo and passport rules
More applications are delayed by the photograph than by anything else. The portal states the required size, format and background. Meet it exactly rather than approximately.
- Take a fresh photo against a plain wall in daylight rather than scanning an old print.
- Face the camera squarely, with a neutral expression and nothing covering the face.
- Check the file size and format limits before uploading, and resize with a normal image tool if needed.
- Do not use a photo with a visible phone case, shadow or another person cropped out.
For the passport, two rules matter. It must be valid well beyond your return, with the margin the portal specifies, and the details on your application must match it exactly. If your passport expires within a year, renew it before applying rather than after.
Paying without a declined card
A declined card at the final screen is common and almost always fixable. The charge is an international one from an unfamiliar merchant, which is exactly the pattern fraud systems block.
Before you reach the payment screen, tell your bank that you are about to make an international payment. Use a card with room on the limit, avoid prepaid cards, and if the first attempt fails, wait rather than retrying five times in a row, which some banks treat as suspicious. Keep the receipt and check your statement for a duplicate charge.
What you are paying for, and which parts belong to whom, is set out in Umrah visa cost explained.
How long it takes and when to apply
Approvals are often quick, sometimes within a couple of days, but there is no service standard you can rely on. Busy seasons, incomplete documents or a case that needs manual review all add time.
| When you travel | Sensible time to apply |
|---|---|
| Quiet months | Several weeks ahead, once dates are firm |
| School holidays | Earlier, because hotels and flights move faster than the visa |
| Ramadan | As early as your plans allow. See the Ramadan Umrah guide for how the season behaves |
The safe order is: firm dates, then visa, then non-refundable bookings. If you must book flights first, book a fare you can change. Our planning timeline sets out the whole sequence.
After approval
The visa arrives by email as a document to print or store. Do three things immediately.
- Check every detail against your passport. An error found now is an email; an error found at the airport is a cancelled trip.
- Save it offline. Download it to your phone as well as leaving it in your inbox, and carry a printed copy.
- Set up Nusuk. Several things you will want inside the two holy mosques are booked in the official app, free of charge. Start with our Nusuk app guide and the Umrah permit guide. If the app refuses to verify you, troubleshooting covers the usual causes.
If it is refused or stuck
A refusal is not always final, and it usually has a mundane cause: a mismatch, an unreadable document, or an application that duplicates one already in the system.
Work through it in order rather than resubmitting blindly.
- Re-read the application you submitted against your passport. Most refusals trace back to a typing error.
- Check whether a provider has also filed for you. Duplicates block each other.
- Confirm your passport validity meets the stated requirement.
- If the reason is unclear, contact the official channel on the portal, or the embassy or consulate covering your area, with your reference number.
- Reapply once, correctly. Repeated identical applications do not help and can complicate the file.
If you are close to your travel date and stuck, speak to a licensed provider. They deal with edge cases weekly and can often tell you in minutes whether a case is fixable.
The one-page checklist
- Decide which passport you are travelling on.
- Confirm which route is open to that passport.
- Check passport validity against the stated requirement.
- Prepare a compliant photo and test that it uploads.
- Copy names exactly from the passport, no abbreviations.
- Tell your bank before paying.
- Save the reference number, the receipt and the visa offline.
- Do not let two applications run for one traveller.
- Install Nusuk and verify your account before departure.
- Check health requirements with your doctor before you travel.
With the visa settled, the next question is usually cost and hotels. Umrah cost sets out the ranges, and if you would rather have independent operators handle the paperwork and quote against your dates, request free quotes.
