Jeddah Airport to Makkah: Arrival Guide for Pilgrims
Most Umrah pilgrims from abroad land at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and then travel on to Makkah by road or rail. The journey is not hard, but it comes at the worst moment: you are tired, often already in ihram, and everything is unfamiliar.
This guide walks through the arrival in order, from the aircraft door to your Makkah hotel, and compares the ways to make the transfer. Terminals, train timetables and fares change, so we describe how things work and tell you where to confirm the details. We do not quote prices here.
Before you land
The arrival goes smoothly when three things are settled before the plane lands: your ihram, your documents and your transfer. If you are going straight to Makkah for Umrah, the widely held view is that you must already be in ihram before the plane passes the miqat. Our miqat guide explains the timing and the scholarly views.
Keep these in your hand luggage, not in the hold:
- Passport, and a printed or saved copy of your visa.
- Hotel booking confirmations for Makkah and Madinah, with the hotel names in Arabic if you can get them.
- Your transfer booking or your operator's arrival contact number.
- Any medication you need in the next 24 hours.
- A charged phone and a power bank.
Install and sign in to the Nusuk app before you travel. Setting it up on airport wifi while tired is a common cause of stress. If it misbehaves, see our Nusuk app troubleshooting guide.
Which terminal you arrive at
Jeddah's airport has more than one terminal, and they are far apart. Which one you use depends on your airline and sometimes on the season. The main ones pilgrims meet are Terminal 1, the North Terminal, and the Hajj and Umrah terminal, which handles many pilgrim flights in busy periods.
Two practical points follow from this. First, tell anyone who is meeting you the terminal as well as the flight number, and check it again on the day, because allocations change. Second, the Haramain high-speed railway station is at Terminal 1. If you land at another terminal and want the train, you will need to get across to Terminal 1 first, so allow time and ask airport staff about the current shuttle arrangement.
Immigration, bags and customs
Expect passport control with fingerprints and a photo, then baggage reclaim, then customs. How long this takes varies a great deal. A quiet arrival can be quick. When several large flights land together, or in Ramadan, queues can be long.
Some simple habits help:
- Use the toilet on the plane before landing. Men in ihram find this easier than queueing later.
- Keep the family together at passport control, and have every passport open at the photo page.
- If you travel with elderly parents, ask staff about assistance. Airlines can arrange a wheelchair if you request it before you fly. See our guide to Umrah for elderly and disabled pilgrims.
- If a bag does not arrive, report it at the airline desk before you leave the hall and keep the reference. This is why ihram and medication belong in hand luggage.
SIM, cash and apps
You need a working phone more than you need cash at this point. Ride-hailing, maps, hotel calls and Nusuk all depend on data. You can buy a local SIM at the airport, use an eSIM you set up at home, or roam. We compare these in staying connected in Saudi Arabia.
Cards are widely accepted in Saudi Arabia, but carry some riyals for small purchases, tips and any driver who prefers cash. Airport ATMs and exchange counters are available. For rates, fees and card tips, see money, ATMs and payments in Saudi Arabia.
Transfer options compared
There are four realistic ways to reach Makkah from the airport: an operator's coach, a pre-booked private transfer, a taxi or ride-hailing car, and the Haramain train. The right one depends on your group size, your luggage, your arrival time and how much uncertainty you can put up with after a long flight.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Operator coach (in a package) | Groups and first-timers. Someone meets you, and the coach goes to your hotel. | Waiting for the whole group to clear immigration. Departure can be slow. |
| Pre-booked private transfer | Families, elderly pilgrims, late-night arrivals. Door to door, fixed price agreed in advance. | Book with a known company, and get the driver's contact and the meeting point in writing. |
| Airport taxi or ride-hailing app | Solo travellers and couples with light luggage and working mobile data. | Agree the fare or use the meter or app price before you set off. Ignore touts inside the terminal. |
| Haramain high-speed train | Those landing at Terminal 1 in train operating hours who want a fast, comfortable ride. | The Makkah station is not at the Haram. You still need a taxi or bus to your hotel. Seats can sell out in peak periods, and luggage limits apply. |
For the train, check the timetable and book on the official Haramain High Speed Railway website or app. Do not plan a tight connection. A delayed flight or a slow immigration queue can easily make you miss a booked train, so look at the change and refund terms before you buy.
What drives the cost of a road transfer? Mainly the vehicle size, the time of day, the season and whether you book ahead. Ramadan and school holidays push prices up. A family of five with luggage will usually need a larger vehicle than a standard saloon, so say how many bags you have when you book. The Umrah cost calculator includes local transport in its estimate.
The road to Makkah
By road, the trip usually takes somewhere over an hour in normal traffic, and longer at busy times. There is a checkpoint on the way into Makkah where officers may check passports and visas. Keep documents within reach, not in the boot.
If you are in ihram, this is a good stretch for the Talbiyah and quiet dua. It is also the moment to drink water and eat something light. Many pilgrims reach the hotel, drop their bags and go straight to the Haram on an empty stomach after 20 hours of travel. That is when people faint in Tawaf.
Arriving in Makkah
Go to your hotel first, then decide when to perform Umrah. There is no rule that you must go to the Haram the minute you arrive. Roads near the Haram are often closed to private cars around prayer times, so your driver may drop you a short walk from the hotel. This is normal. Our Makkah hotels guide explains what hotel distances mean in practice.
If your room is not ready, most hotels will store bags. Rest, eat, renew your wudu, and go when you can give the rites your attention. If the hour is very crowded, waiting a little can help. See best times for Tawaf. Then follow how to perform Umrah step by step.
Arrival checklist
- Ihram on, intention made before the miqat, if you are going straight to Makkah.
- Passport, visa copy and hotel details in hand luggage.
- Terminal confirmed with whoever is meeting you.
- Transfer booked, or a clear plan: taxi rank, app, or train ticket with a safe margin.
- Working data: eSIM active or SIM bought before leaving the terminal.
- Some riyals in cash.
- Water and a snack for the road.
- Hotel name and address saved offline, in Arabic if possible.
If you would rather have someone meet you at the terminal and handle the transfer, that is one of the most useful things a package includes. Request quotes from independent operators and ask each one exactly what their airport transfer covers: meet and greet, vehicle type, and waiting time if your flight is late.
