Flying from Muscat

Muscat has a well-organised Umrah travel trade, and Muscat International Airport runs nonstop flights to Jeddah and Madinah on Oman Air and Saudia, offering a relatively short and comfortable route given the region's proximity. Oman's Ibadi Muslim majority, alongside Sunni and Shia minorities, all perform Umrah, and the country's Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs plays a role in overseeing official Hajj and Umrah arrangements alongside private licensed operators. The Omani rial is used locally, one of the higher-valued currencies globally, worth keeping in mind when comparing package costs. Muscat's climate is extremely hot in summer with milder winters, broadly similar to conditions in Saudi Arabia, so the climate adjustment is generally minimal. Given the relatively short flight time from Muscat, this route is well suited to travellers with limited time off work, though it's still worth building in rest before starting rituals on arrival. Book ahead of Ramadan when demand and fares both rise.

Umrah visa for Omanis

As GCC nationals, Omanis do not need a Saudi visa at all for Umrah; a valid national passport or ID is enough to cross the border, the same citizen arrangement in place for years. Hotel and transport bookings inside Nusuk are compulsory for most pilgrims but not Omanis, though using Nusuk to secure Mataf and Rawdah time-slot permits is still strongly advised, since those crowd-management slots increasingly apply to everyone. For the 1448 AH Umrah season (31 May 2026 to 7 Apr 2027), Omanis can largely travel on their own schedule, though booking a hotel near the Haram early stays wise, since rooms sell out fast in peak weeks.

When to go

Ramadan carries the greatest reward and the greatest crowds and prices; the weeks after Hajj (late Dhul Hijjah into Muharram) and the winter months (November to February) are cooler and quieter. The 1448 AH season runs from 31 May 2026 to 7 April 2027 for arrivals and departures. See the best time to perform Umrah.
