Flying from Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is a convenient, short-haul Umrah departure point, with Zayed International Airport running nonstop flights to Jeddah and Madinah on Etihad Airways and Saudia, and the short flight time making this an accessible trip for the UAE's large resident population, both Emirati citizens and its very large expatriate Muslim workforce. The UAE's Umrah travel trade is large, well regulated, and used to handling everything from individual bookings to large corporate or community group trips. The UAE dirham is used locally and is pegged to the US dollar. Abu Dhabi's climate is extremely hot and humid for much of the year, similar in character to Jeddah's coastal heat, so the adjustment on arrival is generally minor. Given the density of expatriate residents from South Asia and elsewhere, many Abu Dhabi-based agencies also cater specifically to non-Emirati residents booking Umrah trips. Book ahead of Ramadan and UAE public holidays, when demand rises sharply.

Umrah visa for Emiratis

As GCC nationals, Emiratis do not need a Saudi visa at all for Umrah; a valid national passport or ID is enough to cross the border, the same citizen arrangement in place for years. Hotel and transport bookings inside Nusuk are compulsory for most pilgrims but not Emiratis, though using Nusuk to secure Mataf and Rawdah time-slot permits is still strongly advised, since those crowd-management slots increasingly apply to everyone. For the 1448 AH Umrah season (31 May 2026 to 7 Apr 2027), Emiratis can largely travel on their own schedule, though booking a hotel near the Haram early stays wise, since rooms sell out fast in peak weeks.

When to go

Ramadan carries the greatest reward and the greatest crowds and prices; the weeks after Hajj (late Dhul Hijjah into Muharram) and the winter months (November to February) are cooler and quieter. The 1448 AH season runs from 31 May 2026 to 7 April 2027 for arrivals and departures. See the best time to perform Umrah.
